I am beyond excited for this album. Hillsong United has been a huge inspiration to me over the last couple of years. Their last album Aftermath was beyond phenomenal, so I expect nothing less than amazing from Zion.

As you may know, my first body of work was released today. It’s an exciting, new adventure that I am so happy to be starting out on. I just wanted to take some time to thank all the people that have helped me get to this point in my life. I especially want to thank those who have influenced me musically as well.

First and foremost I want to thank Jesus Christ. Without him I wouldn’t be able to do anything that I am doing today. He is my biggest influence out of all of my influences. Every song, every lyrics, and every note is inspired by God. He is my everything. He is the reason why I sing what I sing and why I do what I do. I make my music for Him because I just want to show the world Jesus.

Next I want to thank my cousin/producer Marques Murrey. You are an awesome producer/cousin/friend/musician. Without you, all I would have is vocals and guitar. You are the only person that totally understands me when it comes to music. You understand every complex musical thought that runs through my head and you perfectly execute it with little to no explanation. It’s always a pleasure working with you. I can’t wait to get back to work on the full-length album.

To my parents, thank you for all of your support and love over the years. Thank you for staying on me when I was younger about being a musician. If you didn’t I don’t think I would have the desire to do what I do now. I know I can always count on you two to root for me when nobody else does. I can always count on you two to pray for me when nobody else does. I can always count on you two to love me when nobody does. Thank you for being awesome parents. I love you!

To my little sister, I know I wouldn’t get away without saying “thank you” to you. LOL Thank you for always knowing every word to every song before ever actually hearing a thing. You always seem to fall more in love with my songs than I do, and I think that’s awesome. I love you! Get ready to start learning some more songs for the next album.

To my family, thank each and every last one of you for always supporting me and my musical endeavors. My grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. It’s good to have a support system, and I think you are all the best support system in the world hands down. Always know that I will love and support all of you just how you loved and supported me.

To my friends (7 strong and the faithful few), thank you for all the support, telling your friends and family about the music and actually taking the time to listen to it yourselves. I couldn’t ask for better friends. I can always count on you guys.

To my church family, I cannot fully express how much I appreciate you. You have held me up and supported me all 21 years of my life at Progressive, even back in the day when I my singing was attrocious. LOL Thank you for all the calls, emails, texts, facebook posts, etc. I really appreciate it! Love you all!

To the people that have inspired and influenced me musically. Thank you for all that you have taught me along the years and helping me find the passion for music that I have now. You are my heroes! Whether at church, or school, or anywhere else, you have inspired me greatly and I thank you for that!

Special Thanks to Pastor Billy G. Dixon Jr and CNW Youth Department. Thank you for giving me the oppurtuities to be heard. It’s not something I take for granted at all. I appreciate all of the support and love I receive from you all. You are all the best!!

To everyone that has supported me on my musical journey in any way at all, thank you! There’s so many of you, I don’t want to run the risk of forgetting anybody, so I tried to cover it all above. Just know that I appreciate all you have done for me, said to me, given to me, etc. I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart! I do not take for granted your love and support it keeps me focused and moving forward. So here’s looking at you, and here’s looking at many more “thank yous” in the years to come.

Behind The Album: Depth: The Prelude (EP)

Depth: The Prelude is a 5 track EP comprised of four covers of my favorite songs and one of my own originals. The EP itself serves as a prelude to the album that I have been working for the last year and a half titled: No More Shallow Things. Depth (EP) is a reflection of what the listener can expect to hear on my full length album. Think of Depth as the gateway to No More Shallow Things. Each song was strategically placed on the album not just to help prepare the listener audibly, but to prepare them mentally and spiritually. It is a desire to go to deeper depths in Jesus Christ. This EP marks the beginning of the journey to no more shallow things.

The journey begins with “Search My Heart.” This song was originally performed by Hillsong UNITED andwritten by Joel Houston and Matt Crocker (2011). Published by Hillsong Music Publishing and EMI CMG Publishing. This is my favorite song by Hillsong UNITED out of all of them. I recently heard the writers mention that “Search My Heart” was written as a sincere prayer to God from the innermost workings of the heart. The first line of the song petitions God to search our hearts. When we allow God to search our hearts, He can remove the things in us that keep us from pursuing a deeper relationship with Him. On the journey to no more shallow things, we need God to to search our hearts and separate us from the things that may hinder us along the way.

The next track on the album is “Word of God Speak.” This song was originally performed by MercyMe and written by Peter Kipley and Bart Millard (2002). Published by Wordspring Music, Simpleville Music, and Songs from the Indigo Room. This is one my favorite songs of all time, so there was no way I was going to pass up the chance to cover it. To me, it plays a very important role on the album. It is another prayer to God. A prayer asking Him just to speak to us. This is so important in this and age because with everything going on in our busy world, we need to take time to stop and just listen to the voice of God. When He speaks to us, He gives us direction and guidance that is necessary for us to become closer to Him.

The third song on the EP is “The Anthem.” This song was originally performed by Planetshakers and written by Henry Seeley, Joth Hunt, and Liz Webber (2008). Published by Planet Shakers Ministries International Inc. This song is a pure worship song. Initially, my cousin/producer wanted to cover this song more than I did. I agreed to do it because it was a great song and of course I trust my producer. After listening to the song a couple of times, I fell in love with it. It really moved me. The lyrics captivated me in a way that other songs I was considering hadn’t. It’s a great worship song that reminds me of Jesus’s sacrifice for me. What an awesome sacrifice.

The fourth song is “Hallelujah.” This song was orinigally performed by The Digital Age and written by Griffin Kelp (2009). Published by Wacotron3000 and The Digital Age. I just really love this song. It sounded like a perfect song to combine with “The Anthem,” so I just did it. The song is so simple, but so powerful. Something happens when you say “Hallelujah” over and over again. It just get’s in your spirit and you can’t help but feel joyful and peaceful. It was song I just had to cover.

The last song on the journey is “Oh How I Love You.” Orignally performed and written by Gionovan (Gion) Bean (2011). Published by no one as of now. In an effort to keep from sounding redundant, I will post the link to the story behind the song.

Working on Depth has been such an interesting, challenging, and fun ride for me. I really enjoyed the process of interpreting other artists songs in my own way. All of the songs were carefully selected as a way to give the listeners and in-depth look into what can be expected from my full length album, No More Shallow Things,as well as my many future musical endeavors. However, beyond that, the songs were selected as a way to encourage listeners to develop a deeper relationship with Christ and prepare them to take the journey into deeper depths. These songs have resonated within me. I pray they resonate within you as well.
